‘These sonnets, except the last, were written between August and October 2019. They are part of and towards an as yet unnamed sequence, but also comprise an episode, or perhaps moment of clarity, within that sequence. I tried to retain that clarity but it broke up, and some of that breakdown became IN IT (Gang Press, 2019). It is often difficult for me to tell at what level a break occurs in a work—I know where the breaks are, but I rarely know whether it is a new section of the same poem, a new poem, a new sequence, or another project. I’d like to think that that indeterminability of levels is partly what’s at stake in much of the work.’ —R.K.
